2018 Reading Challenges | Time to set the goals for new year!

2018 Reading Challenges I'm Participating in

2017 is about to end in just one month! Can you believe this? Where did the time go? Anyways, in terms of reading, 2017 has been a really great year for me. I was actually able to complete my Goodreads goal which I never thought I would, at the start of the year. But see, here I am, all dancing 😀

Happy gif

Apart from Goodreads challenge, I also took other challenges and though I haven’t completed all of them, I am proud to at least reach that level. You can find my challenges for the year 2017 here.

So in the year 2018 too, I have planned to take part in a few challenges and hopefully this time I even do better 🙂 In this post, I am just listing the challenges in which I’ll take part. My actual progress will be noted in my 2018 challenges page (which I’ll create later).

As of now, I am going to participate in the following challenges in 2018.

Goodreads Reading Challenge 2018

I set a goal of 50 books for the year 2017 and I completed it 😀 In 2018 too, I have decided to keep a goal of 50 books because this number just seems realistic to me. It is kind of achievable given the various happenings in my life 😀

2018 Popsugar Reading Challenge

2018 Popsugar reading challenge POPSUGAR has been creating a reading challenge each year since 2015 and it is quite popular. I participated in 2017 in this challenge and though I didn’t complete it, I am happy with my progress.

For this year, Popsugar has reduced the challenge prompts to 50 from 52 in 2017. And I think, this time prompts are even better and this is going to be fun 😀 For full details about this challenge, visit the official POPSUGAR Reading Challenge 2018 page.

There is even a Goodreads group to keep track of your progress and interacting with others.

2018 Beat The Backlist Challenge

Beat the Backlist 2018This is a new challenge that I am participating in 2018.  I cam to know about this challenge a few days back and I was quite excited about this. I have felt this year, that because of various review copies and new books, the old releases keep on stacking on my shelves and I am not able to read them. One of my goal for 2018 is to definitely reduce this pile and this challenge is definitely going to help me with this.

#BeatTheBacklist challenge was started by NovelKnight in 2017 and they are back in 2018 too with this challenge with slight modifications. As per NovelKnight, “this is a reading challenge where your goal is to read backlist books (published prior to the current year). ” This is a year long (runs from January 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018) reading challenge and you can decide your own goal, can set your own TBR and can read at your own pace. What else do we need, right?

So, there are just two things to know about this challenge:

  • The challenge will run from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018.
  • Books must be released prior to 2018 to count for this challenge.

You need to post you challenge signup post/link to the official signup page and after that, you will be assigned to a team. There is also a Goodreads group for the challenge. And the best thing is, you don’t need to have a blog to participate in it. You can simply state your declaration by creating a Goodreads shelf, or declare your participation on social media with the hashtag #BeatTheBacklist. Also, there will be giveaways etc. Sounds fun, right?

The four teams are:

  • The Novel Knights
  • The Dewey Dragons
  • The Story Sorcerers
  • The Book Bards

My team is: STORY SORCERERS!

Team Story sorcerers

My goal for Beat the Backlist challenge is going to be 20 books. I don’t want to set a huge goal for myself. Also at this time I am not setting any possible TBR as I never stick to the books that I plan to read 😛

Indian Books Challenge 2018

Indian books challengeis a challenge that I created myself in order to read more Indian books. I realized that I often tend to read more foreign authors books than the Indian books, so I created this challenge. The aim of this challenge is read at least 12 books written by Indian authors over the span of the year. Simple, right?

2018 Alphabet Soup Reading Challenge

2018 Alphabet Soup Reading ChallengeIn 2017, I participate in A-Z Book challenge which runs over at Goodreads. Alphabet Soup Challenge is a similar challenge and for 2018 I decided to join with Escape with Dollycas Into a Good Book for this challenge. This name is so interesting 😛 The official page for the 2018 Alphabet Soup Reading Challenge is here. There is also an active Facebook group for this challenge. It runs from January 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018.

All you need to do for this challenge is to match the beginning letter of a book title to a letter of the alphabet. You can drop the A’s and The’s from the book titles. Except For those pesky Q, X AND Z titles then the word that starts with the challenge letter can be anywhere in the title.

You are doing SO MANY reading challenges, this is SO great! I probably will stick with the one Goodreads challenge and that will be it, I’m not sure yet, but… I don’t want to commit to any challenge I won’t be able to follow through, haha.
BEST OF LUCK FOR IT ALL 😀

Haha thanks Marie! Well this time I have just accepted the easy ones 😜 They are multiple others out there and I can’t even think of considering them 😬

Welcome to STORY SORCERERS! 🙂 I’m part of the team. I’m thinking of joining another challenge. I failed at this during the year of 2017 because I kept thinking that I have to have different books for each challenge when I can simple use the same books if the prompt asked for it. I need to do that for 2018 so I can have fun and enjoy my reading.

Oh yes! It reminded me I can use same books for different prompts for POPSugar? I am so behind in it 😃 Thanks for the idea ❤️ I hope you do better next year!

Yeah I can understand the commitments 😐 But I have just chosen the ones in which there are not much rule and are pretty easy 😬 Though I don’t mind if I didn’t complete them at the end 🤣

I only do the Goodreads challenge, although I could probably do the “Beat the Backlist” as well, since I rarely read new releases. Good luck with all of these! It’ll be interesting to see how well they all mesh together!

Wow, that’s quite a few reading challenges there lol Good luck! ❤︎ I look forward to seeing all the books from them.

I only ever do the Goodreads challenge because I’m awful at keeping up with anything else. Maybe I’ll give a small one a go next year, they do seem fun. 🙂

Haha Thanks Jade. I have also selected the challenges which are easy to do 😀 I hope you do any of these challenges too ❤️

Oh my God, that is too many for a year. I might be doing the A-Z thing and usual Goodreads challenge. I think if I commit to anything more than that it would just stress me up and fuddle everything uo. But hey, good for you, all the best.

Haha trust me they are not many 😜 The only one that is difficult to completely is the Popsugar challenge but I don’t worry about completing all of them. I just try to find new books to read and these challenges prove to make that possible 😊

  6. Valerie

I really feel like I should participate in more reading challenges, but the only one I do is the Goodreads one, and even that I set my number of books to 1 haha. I think my problem is that I don’t want to be forced to read anything I’m not in the mood for. But these seem pretty fun regardless!

Yeah true.. no one likes to be forced to read something. But I have chosen all the challenges which are really easy and gives you lot of choices. Also they help you discover new books which you wouldn’t have discovered if not for that challenge. This happened a lot to me this year 😊
